Artist Statement
It all starts with colour. My inspiration is taken from the beautiful, natural environment I’m so fortunate to live in. Once I select the composition and three main colours – I start squeezing and pouring on the paint. My process is like performance art. I work with the canvas on the floor and I use my whole body to scrape, scratch and move the paint on the canvas – sometimes revealing sections of the under painting and other times adding colour – working wet on wet. I get lost in the moment as the art magically appears.
I’m fundamentally concerned with capturing and representing the natural world around me through my work. “My work represents a balance between my enthusiasm for transformative images and intuitive engagement. I strive to unite these altered images by enhancing representative imagery, resulting in work that extends the natural beauty of reality.”

Artist Bio
Janice Rafael is a self-taught emerging artist who creates paintings in various styles using oil, acrylic, watercolour and mixed media. She is also a printer, photographer, sculptor and potter.
Janice taught arts and crafts classes to children in Victoria, BC; and to seniors and users of mental health services in London, England. In London she managed a large arts and crafts department where she taught a wide range of skills: sewing, knitting, crochet, weaving, silk painting, pottery, wood burning, sculpture, wall murals, basketry, mosaics and fine art painting in oils, acrylic, and watercolour.
As a self-taught artist, her approach to art is non-traditional. Janice strives to understand the “rules” of art, but then often pushes their boundaries to achieve the effects that touch her emotions through the use of intense colours and patterns. She sees many colours in each subject and often uses colours based on the feeling they bring to the painting. Janice likes to introduce new ways of seeing to the people who view her art.
Her work has been presented in juried art exhibitions in Toronto, Ontario; London, England; and Sechelt, Gibsons and Vancouver, BC. Janice also had the pleasure of studying under the direction of the English watercolour artist Jenni White, through a three-week workshop around Spain and Portugal. From 2013-2014 Janice was the event coordinator for the Eleven Equal Artists’ Power of Paint art exhibition, in Sechelt, BC and from 2014-2015 she coordinated online marketing for the Sunshine Coast Art Crawl.
